Pilate couldn't understand the unwavering confidence of Jesus in the face of adversity.
Then Pilate said to him, You say nothing to me? is it not clear to you that I have power to let you go free and power to put you to death on the cross? Jesus gave this answer: You would have no power at all over me if it was not given to you by God; so that he who gave me up to you has the greater sin. Hearing this, Pilate had a desire to let him go free, but the Jews said in a loud voice, If you let this man go, you are not Caesar's friend: everyone who makes himself a king goes against Caesar. (John 19.10-12 Bible in Basic English (BBE))
When Jesus stood in front of Pilate, he did not tremble. He stood sure about who he was, why he had come to earth, and what he would become. The unwavering confidence of Jesus moved Pilate. Pilate's heart yearned to release Jesus; he could see the truth and was afraid of it. His fear and his destiny from God would not allow him to have the strength to free Jesus. Pilate hardened his heart and went forward, leading Jesus to his death on the cross. His conscience told him it was wrong, but his arrogance and fear of the Jews and what Ceasar might think prevailed.
Can you learn anything about yourself and your actions and decisions from this? Are you reminded of someone you know? If we allow it, we all likely have a bit of Pilate in us.
Loving and steadfast God, how difficult it must have been to watch Pilate and not allow him to change his mind about Jesus. But you had your eyes fixed on the goal and didn't waver. That is something I can learn from. If I showed a fraction of the grit that Jesus showed, it would be an improvement in my life and could bring some beautiful things for me and the world. I would appreciate your help with having a significant portion of the strength you and Jesus demonstrated. Then, enable me to use that strength for you and in ways that would benefit you. I need your continual guidance to lead me on the path to you. I get lost and unsure, but I know you can bring me safely to where I need to be and what I need to do. Thank you for the journey so far, and I am confident that the next steps will be exciting and joy-filled as long as I walk in your shadow. In Jesus name, I pray. Amen
