My plea today is to ask God to make me like John the Baptist.
And this is the witness of John when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to him with the question, Who are you? He said quite openly and straightforwardly, I am not the Christ. And they said to him, What then? Are you Elijah? And he said, I am not. Are you the prophet? And his answer was, I am not. So they said to him, Who are you then? We have to give some answer to those who sent us. What have you to say about yourself? He said, I am the voice of one crying in the waste land, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said Isaiah the prophet. Those who had been sent came from the Pharisees. And they put this question to him, saying, Why then are you giving baptism if you are not the Christ, or Elijah, or the prophet? John's answer was: I give baptism with water; but there is one among you of whom you have no knowledge; It is he who is coming after me; I am not good enough to undo his shoes. These things took place at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan, where John was giving baptism. (John 1.19-28 Bible in Basic English (BBE))
John the Baptist foretold Jesus. Jesus foretells what is to come and the choice we can make. This was to help people believe and want to know God through Jesus Christ and as a result hunger for eternal salvation.
You are not John the Baptist, but your mission is similar to his. Bring others to God through the redemption of Jesus Christ. Sometimes, you are questioned, challenged, or doubted, but your task is straightforward. Persist in your faith, be vocal about your faith, and help others grow faith with all you meet and surround yourself with.
Prayer:
Loving Jesus, bringer of salvation to all who accept you, heal the weaknesses that prevent me from demonstrating your love in everything I do. Heal my voice so I might help others find you and enrich their experiences with you. Heal the deafness of this world to God's word and the joy knowing and accepting you can bring. Make me like John the Baptist, clear in my beliefs, headstrong, and vocal for you. Thank you for the glory of your presence in my life. I am grateful. Jesus, each day would be too long and dark without you and your Father. I am so thankful for your love and sacrifice. Amen.
