Your role in helping others break free of the sin of slavery.
A disciple is not greater than his master, or a servant than his lord. It is enough for the disciple that he may be as his master, and the servant as his lord. (Matthew 10.24-25 Bible in Basic English (BBE))
Time and time again, we see references to enslaved people all around us—those who, through no choice, live in servitude to another.
This has been a practice since very early in human existence. People often placed themselves into servitude so they could have food and shelter. To do otherwise could have meant a miserable death. Others became slaves simply by the family they were born into.
Today slavery to save one's life still occurs willingly or by treachery.
It is just as wrong today as it was in the past. Every person deserves a life free of bondage from another person. There is also slavery that is self-inflicted, slavery to things, which can be just as harmful. How many people have we heard about dying from slavery to drugs and alcohol? You do likely know someone affected by this kind of slavery.
If you see an opportunity where you can change the slavery of another, take action. Imitate our Lord, become like our master, our father. Help them break free of whatever enslaves them. God does want his people to be slaves of other people or things. He demonstrated this so well with Israel. Pray at minimum, open your heart, and pray for all who suffer as modern enslaved people. Unfortunately, it could be next door or in your home.
Prayer:
God and master of my life. I know that people who are enslaved in some fashion have come into my life. I may not have prayed for them as I should have. Forgive. I ask that you help them today and help me fight the sin of slavery by acting in whatever way you guide me. I ask you to help all who are enslaved in any way to break free of the bonds that hold them. For those imprisoned in a life they do not want, I ask you to help someone set them free. Empower someone who can make a difference for them. Help me encourage others to pray for those who need freedom, so they can have opportunities to imitate you and live with you in the best possible way.
For all who need I ask today for your blessings and the gift of strength to all who can help. Amen.
