What is Tangling and Why You Should Consider Adding it to Your Life

These are some thoughts on how you might start tangling—no need to buy anything. Start with supplies you already have. Just start!

1. Choose your tangling materials:

  • You'll need a comfortable pen or marker to hold and produce a consistent line, such as a gel pen, fine-tip Sharpie, or a Micron pen. I bought some gel pens from Dollar Tree, and I absolutely love to practice tangles with them! They flow so well. I don't expect them to be archival or permanent for practice purposes, so they are a great resource.

  • You'll also need some paper or a sketchbook to draw on. Some tanglers prefer to use specialized "Zentangle tiles," small square pieces of high-quality paper designed for tangling.

2. Learn some basic tangle patterns: There are thousands of tangle patterns to choose from, but it's a good idea to start with some basic ones when you're first getting started. The Zentangle Method website has a library of official tangle patterns that you can learn for free, along with step-by-step instructions and examples.

3. Practice regularly: As with any art form, the key to improving your tangling skills is to practice regularly. Set aside some time each day or week to practice tangling, even if it's just for a few minutes. As you practice, you'll develop a better sense of your own style and preferences.

4. Don't worry about mistakes: One of the hallmarks of tangling is that there are no mistakes - if you make a mark that you don't like, you can simply incorporate it into your design or start over on a new piece of paper. Don't worry too much about creating a "perfect" finished product - focus on enjoying the process of tangling and experimenting with different patterns and techniques.

5. Experiment with different materials and techniques: Once you're comfortable with the basics of tangling, you can start to experiment with different materials and techniques. For example, you might try tangling on a different surface, such as a rock or a piece of fabric, or you might experiment with using different colors or types of pens or markers.

6. Take a class or workshop: If you want to learn more about tangling, you might consider taking a class or workshop. There are many online courses and in-person classes available, and these can be a great way to learn new techniques, get feedback on your work, and connect with other tanglers.

By following these tips, you can get started with tangling and begin to explore this creative and meditative art form.

Thanks for easy-to-follow guidance, encased with the motivation to enjoy tangling.

I'll think of you as I pick up the pen and have fun.

Thanks!
